Parental Access to Records

FERPA Privacy Policy Statement

The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor respects the privacy of its students; therefore, the employees of the University strictly adhere to the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974 (FERPA).  This act sets requirements regarding the privacy of student records, governing:
     (1) release of these educational records maintained by the institution, and
     (2) access to these records.
The act provides that directory information on students can be made available to the general public.  However, the student has the right to notify UMHB that the information cannot be released.  If a student does not want the directory information released, the student must notify the Office of the Registrar in writing within 4 days of the beginning of each semester.

Parental Access to Children's Educational Records

FERPA states that when a student reaches the age of 18 or begins attending a postsecondary institution regardless of age, FERPA rights transfer to the student.  Records can only be released to parents through
     (1) the written consent of the student, or
     (2) after it has been determined that their child is legally their dependent (most recent income tax form).
The student must complete a "FERPA Release Form" or submit a letter in writing to the Office of the Registrar in order to grant the parent the right to non-directory information.  This form is available in the Registrar's Office and is the back page of the dual credit advising form.  A student also has the right to revoke the release of this information at any time.

Public Notice Designating Directory Information

Category I:  Name, current and permanent addresses, marital status, telephone number(s), email address, dates of attendance, classification
Category II:  Previous institution(s) attended, major field of study, awards, honors (including Provost and Dean's List), degree(s) conferred (including dates)
